The Director of Cytogenetics provides strategic direction and leadership for all administrative, fiscal, technical, and scientific functions within the Department of Cytogenetics. This role ensures the safe, efficient, and high‑quality operation of the department’s core programs, including clinical diagnostic services, laboratory-based research and development, translational research initiatives, and the Cytogenetics Shared Resources Core Facility.
The Director serves as an institutional consultant, partnering with departments, divisions, committees, Medical Center and BRI scientists, as well as external investigators through the CCSG‑funded shared resources program. Responsibilities include providing expert analysis, testing recommendations to support diagnosis and patient care, and guidance on project management related to workflow, facilities, publications, regulatory compliance, and grant-related requirements.
This position reports directly to the Executive Director of Pathology Laboratories and the Chair of Pathology, and holds full authority and responsibility over the Division of Cytogenetics.
As a successful candidate, you will:
Interpret & report results: Review, interpret, and finalize cytogenetic, FISH, and microarray results; communicate clear genetic diagnoses to medical staff.
Develop & manage lab procedures: Implement departmental procedures and ensure compliance with regulatory inspections (state, CAP, Joint Commission).
Oversee lab quality & compliance: Monitor QA/QC, proficiency testing, and maintain inspection readiness and safety standards.
Lead financial management: Manage budgets, billing, vendor contracts, and improve efficiency while expanding revenue-generating tests.
Supervise & develop staff: Oversee hiring, training, scheduling, evaluations, and mentorship of laboratory personnel.
Support research & innovation: Lead validation of new assays and contribute to translational research and cytogenetic services for scientists.
Qualifications
Your qualifications should include:
- M.D. or Ph.D. with postdoctoral clinical fellowship training in Clinical Cytogenetics or Laboratory Genetics and Genomics.
- Clinical cytogeneticist, preferably with previous experience as a Director of a full-service Cytogenetics laboratory, and a minimum of five years of experience as a Director of Clinical Cancer Cytogenetics.
- Must be currently boarded by American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG) in Clinical Cytogenetics or Laboratory Genetics and Genomics (LGG).
- Must hold a State of California Clinical Cytogeneticist (CCG) license in good standing, or be eligible to obtain CCG. If from out of state and currently not holding CCG license, must apply for it and obtain within 24 months of hire, and must obtain Clinical Cytogenetics Scientist (CCGS) license within 3 months of hire.
