A Child Life Specialist is available within the Supportive Care Medicine and Pediatrics teams. You will be responsible for providing educational and therapeutic interventions for pediatric patients and their families as well as the children/grandchildren of adult patients as well as promote pediatric patients’ emotional, social, and cognitive growth and development.
The Department of Supportive Care Medicine utilizes a staff leadership model, and every employee is expected to take a leadership role in the department, including active involvement on a department work team. You will be expected to actively participate in 1) marketing the department and department products and services; 2) educational and group programs, 3) program development and fundraising efforts, and 4) outreach to patients, families, other City of Hope departments and the community.
As a successful candidate, you will:
· Incorporate a variety of child and family-centered, therapeutic interactions into interventions that support pediatric patients, their families and the children and grandchildren of adult patients in coping with hospitalization, illness and treatment.
· Educate pediatric patients and their siblings and children/grandchildren of adult patients about treatments, procedures, and/or surgery by using developmentally appropriate clinical education.
· Provide consultation to the health care team regarding the developmental status and individual needs of the patient and family to promote optimal adaptation to hospitalization and treatment.
· Communicate observations, assessments, and recommendations for care to other members of the interdisciplinary team in a timely manner through participation in interdisciplinary rounds, verbal reports, and concise documentation in the medical record.
· Assist with coordinating group education and support programs such as CLIMB. Actively contribute to program development as a member/leader of the Supportive Care Medicine Work Teams
· Develop and conduct in-service training related to Child Life and developmentally appropriate care for patient care provider and the community.
Qualifications
Your qualifications should include:
· Masters degree in Child Life or related field
· Completion of Child Life accredited practicum (200 hrs.) and internship (minimum 600 clinical hrs.) in a hospital setting.
· Child Life Certification or ability to take exam within 6 months of hire. Must pass certification to become a Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) within a year. Must be an active member of the Association of Child Life Professionals
