The Lead Phlebotomist is responsible for supporting the efficient functioning of the laboratory as it relates to staffing, appointment scheduling, inventory, policy and procedures, monitoring quality control, customer service, and equipment maintenance.
Functions as lead Phlebotomist and performs the following Phlebotomist LTA II duties: Draws blood from City of Hope patients and donors using appropriate procedures, guidelines and standards. Processes specimens for in-house / send-out laboratory testing. Works under the direction of Phlebotomy Supervisor to provide high-level support and assistance with a variety of tasks within the laboratory, including but not limited to new staff mentoring, specimen / workflow problem issue resolution, special request draws, supply ordering and procedure development. Works as part of the Clinical Pathology department team in fulfilling departmental and medical center objectives. The Phlebotomist LTA Lead will play an integral role in the quality of our patient’s experience.

As a successful candidate, you will:
- Draw blood in accordance with physician order using appropriate techniques and equipment. Observe patient for any unusual reactions or events, before, during and after procedure. Take appropriate action following established guidelines.
- Collect and delivers specimens for analysis, using appropriate or specified equipment for collecting and handling specimens. Ensure proper labeling and obtains pertinent clinical information on request forms. Follow up on problem resolution as instructed by supervisor.
- Develop and maintain knowledge of various aspects of processing specimens. Centrifuge blood specimens in test tubes and capillary tubes to separate cells and sediment from blood serum. Coordinate and route specimens to proper area of the laboratory.
- Prepare monthly staff schedule and evaluate daily staff assignments.
- Maintain all appropriate phlebotomy logs in a timely manner and based on frequency, such as maintenance logs and temperature logs
- Provide staff training and perform competency observations of staff.
- Responsible for troubleshooting and documenting workflow and specimen collection problems that may arise. Assist in maintaining up-to-date SOP policy and procedure manuals.
- Greet patients, process the laboratory orders, and direct patients to their next station.
- Prioritize work and provide prompt and efficient service. Participate on special projects and teams.
- Cooperate with other personnel to achieve department and interdepartmental objectives and maintain good employee relations. Excellent communication with providers to help support improved workflows for the lab and to examine efficient cost of lab ordering.
- Provide oversight over section activities on weekends and when Supervisor is away.
- Support proper documentation of procedure and qualify initiatives to improve the patient experience.
- Prepare and submit supply orders assist with periodic inventory counts, report shortages and problems to supervisor as they occur.
Qualifications
Your qualifications should include:
- High School or equivalent (GED)
- Four years’ experience as a competent Phlebotomist
- California phlebotomy technician license required
- BLS Certification through the American Heart Association
