Join the forefront of groundbreaking research at City of Hope where we're changing lives and making a real difference in the fight against cancer, diabetes, and other life-threatening illnesses. Our dedicated and compassionate faculty and staff are driven by a common mission: Contribute to innovative approaches in predicting, preventing, and curing diseases, shaping the future of medicine through cutting-edge research.

City of Hope has a Research Associate II opportunity available in the laboratory of Dr. Thinzar Lwin. Our laboratory studies the intersection of surgical oncology and tumor immunology, focusing on the development of fluorescent molecular imaging and targeted photoimmunotherapy (PIT). To accurately model clinical pathology, our group uses primary patient-derived biospecimens and complex orthotopic immunocompetent mouse models to determine how targeted optical probes can be used in visualizing and treating cancers. We evaluate the capacity of this technology to induce immunogenic cell death using high-dimensional flow cytometry and live-cell tracking to measure shifts in cell populations within the tumor immune microenvironment. We are looking for a highly motivated, project-oriented individual capable of independent time management and effective collaboration within a translational research team. Investigators joining this team will execute highly translational research to advance intraoperative guidance and systemic solid tumor therapy.

As a successful candidate, you will:

Laboratory Operations and Equipment

  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, biosafety hoods, microscopes, and flow cytometers.

  • Prepare solutions, reagents, buffers, stains, and media; track inventory, order supplies, and support efficient lab operations.

  • Maintain regulatory compliance by managing and updating IACUC, radiation safety, and general laboratory protocols.

In-Vitro Assays and In-Vivo Translational Modeling.

  • Execute mammalian tissue culture protocols, process patient-derived tumor biospecimens, and perform in-vitro functional assays in compliance with IRB and biosafety guidelines.

  • Administer targeted photoimmunotherapy (PIT) and perform whole-body molecular imaging with optical and fluorescent probes to assess surgical guidance.

  • Investigate immunogenic cell death and longitudinal changes in the tumor immune microenvironment using live-cell tracking, multi-parameter flow cytometry, and sample preparation for downstream genomic, proteomic, and spatial analyses.

Experimental Design and Data Handling

  • Assist in planning experiments, optimizing protocols, and interpreting results in collaboration with the PI.

  • Maintain accurate electronic laboratory notebooks, sample logs, and project documentation, and perform computational analyses such as multi-color flow cytometry panels with opportunities to advance in bioinformatics.

Qualifications

Your qualifications should include:

  • Bachelor’s degree. Master’s degree preferred.

  • Two years related research/ laboratory experience with a Bachelor’s degree or one year related research/ laboratory experience with a Master’s degree.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Highly motivated, project-oriented individual capable of independent time management and effective collaboration within a translational oncology research team.

  • Hands-on experience with core molecular biology techniques.

  • Proficiency in live animal handling, orthotopic surgical modeling, in-vivo molecular imaging, and flow cytometry.

  • Familiarity with R and/or SPSS for statistical analysis.

Additional Information:

  • COH employees may apply for a transfer or promotion to job openings for which they meet the minimum qualifications if they meet the following criteria:

  • Employed at COH in current role for at least one year, unless otherwise stipulated in an applicable collective bargaining agreement.

  • Are in good standing and have no current performance issues.
