The Deputy General Counsel, Technology Transactions serves as a key member of the City of Hope legal team, providing strategic legal guidance across a wide range of cutting-edge intellectual property and technology matters. In this highly visible role, you will support technology commercialization, software and SaaS transactions, and data-driven initiatives, while partnering closely with leadership across the organization—including commercialization, innovation, and IT. This is a unique opportunity to help shape the legal strategy behind groundbreaking research and emerging technologies that directly impact patient care and scientific advancement.

As a successful candidate, you will:

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to commercialization and technology teams, supporting IP licensing, research collaborations, and technology transfer initiatives 
  • Negotiate and structure complex agreements, including software, SaaS, data licensing, and technology transactions 
  • Provide legal counsel on emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, data governance, and digital health technologies 
  • Guide stakeholders through legal considerations related to development, adoption, and commercialization of new technologies 
  • Advise senior leadership and cross-functional teams on risk, strategy, and compliance matters 
  • Partner with internal committees, including AI and data governance groups, to support enterprise initiatives 
  • Develop policies, templates, and processes to streamline contracting and legal workflows 
  • Monitor regulatory and legal developments impacting IP, technology, and data and provide proactive guidance 
  • Manage and oversee outside counsel while driving efficient, high-quality legal outcomes

Qualifications

Your qualifications should include:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school
  • Active membership in at least one U.S. State Bar (California preferred) 
  • 10+ years of relevant in-house experience or 7+ years in a top law firm environment 
  • Deep experience in technology transactions, including IP licensing, software, and SaaS agreements 
  • Experience supporting healthcare, biotechnology, or research organizations 
  • Proven ability to manage outside counsel and complex legal matters 
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to translate legal complexity into practical guidance
  • Exceptional communication skills and executive presence

  • Highly organized with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
