Assumes the accountability and responsibility as a professional nurse for providing total, comprehensive, continuous, and patient centered care for an assigned group of patients.  Provides direct patient contact, which includes assessing the patient, developing a comprehensive nursing plan of care, implementing aspects of nursing care to meet identified patient care outcomes, evaluating the effectiveness of a nursing plan of care and education of patients/care givers who require infusion therapy and other nursing services.  Follows established nursing objectives, standards, policies, and procedures. Practices within the defined scope of practice for the Registered Nurse and commits to providing safe, quality infusion nursing care.

The successful candidate:

  • Must be able to work 12 hour shifts, 9a - 9p.
  • Collect patient data and complete required documentation with appropriate responses according to unit standards.
  • Complete toxicity screen on all patients.
  • Update allergies in Electronic Medical Record.
  • Update patients’ current medication in Electronic Medical Record.
  • Identify patients’ problems/needs and sets priorities.
  • Identify problems requiring further referral and/or follow-up.
  • Interpret and record latest diagnostic results.
  • Perform nursing assessment using critical thinking skills.
  • Provide information to physicians and other Health Care Professionals of changes in patients’ condition.
  • Educate the patient and caregivers about the disease process, side effects and health promotion.
  • Document the education provided to the patient or caregiver and the assessment of the patients or caregivers comprehension.
  • Explain nursing procedures. Provide discharge teaching.
  • Participate in orientation of new personnel through preceptorship.
  • Develop a plan of care based on nursing process, which incorporates the plans of other disciplines and continuing care needs.
  • Include the patient/family in developing or revising the plan of care.
  • Make referrals to multidisciplinary support services.
  • Care provided conforms to accepted practice standards (ONS)
  • Provide treatments/procedures and other care as prescribed and according to patient care standards and plan of care
  • Demonstrate understanding of age-related characteristics and needs of patients served.
  • Identify emergency situations and independently initiate appropriate actions.
  • Act as an advocate and coordinator of patient care with other health care personnel and evaluate patient care measures instituted.
  • Understand and demonstrate respect for patient rights and utilize established mechanisms for management of ethical issues in patient care.
  • Consultant to the healthcare profession, patient or caregiver regarding patient advocacy and delivery of safe, competent, and quality nursing care.
  • Perform handoff communication as appropriate.
  • Administer medications, chemotherapy, IV fluids and blood products safely and per policy.
  • Follow hospital based policy regarding equipment maintenance and infection control measures.
  • Record patient care delivered as planned and any variation, with appropriate rationale.
  • Make and record observations related to impending or associated problems.
  • Implement nursing measures related to impending or associated problems.
  • Use nursing process, delegate nursing care to appropriate personnel and supervise care given.
  • Comply with hospital expectations to meet staffing demands based on patient care needs.
  • Comply with policies addressing safe working conditions; monitor and report unsafe working conditions.
  • Recognize inappropriate and/or ineffective patient care management, resolve issue/problem and complete written reports.
  • Demonstrate active participation in KPI processes:  responsible for performance improvement as it relates to nursing.
  • Alter practice as needed when opportunities to improve care are identified by PI rendering quality patient care.
  • Resource for the effective clinical management employ the nursing process and has evidence of validation of clinical skills necessary for those activities associated with the care of the patient.
  • Recognize unit problems and take responsibility for notifying appropriate personnel and documenting.
  • Willingness to float to other units as directed by supervisor/manager.

Qualifications

Your qualifications should include:

  • Current state Registered Nurse License required
  • BSN Degree required or enrolled within 6 months of hire and completed within 3 years from hire date
  • Minimum 2 years in hematology/oncology, stem cell or bone marrow transplant center
  • Current BLS (Obtain AHA certificate within 30 days of hire) required
  • ACLS ((Obtain AHA certificate within 30 days of hire)) preferred
  • Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Chemotherapy certification preferred
  • Current Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Provider Card or must obtain within 6 months of hire
  • Experience in multi-disciplinary approach to patient care
  • Excellent infusion therapy-related skills (peripheral and central lines)
