The Director of Surgical Services holds a pivotal role in ensuring the efficient operation and high-quality care delivery within the perioperative services areas.

The successful candidate:

  • Operational Management: Oversee the daily operations of Surgical Services, ensuring alignment with the overall strategic plan of the organization while maintaining fiscal responsibility.

  • Clinical Excellence: Serve as a role model for professional nursing excellence, providing leadership in maintaining high standards of patient care and safety within the perioperative services areas.

  • Staff Supervision and Development: Manage and mentor clinical and non-clinical staff, fostering their professional growth and development. Provide timely feedback and support to ensure staff competence and performance excellence.

  • Equipment and Supplies Management: Analyze surgical supplies and equipment using evidence-based methods to ensure optimal utilization and functionality. Maintain cleanliness, sterility, and proper functioning of operating room suite and equipment to provide a safe environment for patients and staff.

  • Collaboration and Liaison: Serve as a liaison to other procedurally based areas such as imaging and radiation oncology, fostering collaboration and coordination of care across departments.

  • Quality and Patient Care: Partner with nursing leadership to exceed quality and patient care goals. Implement policies and procedures to ensure quality patient outcomes and exceed accreditation standards.

  • Accreditation and Compliance: Actively participate in accreditation preparation and ensure compliance with all standards and federal/state regulations. Seek and maintain Center of Excellence certifications provided by governing organizations like the Joint Commission.

  • Resource Utilization: Direct the utilization of resources to maximize patient care delivery and productivity. Plan staffing schedules to ensure appropriate medical personnel presence during surgical procedures and post-anesthesia recovery.

  • Staff Engagement and Goal Setting: Guide, motivate, and develop staff by setting clear goals, providing feedback, and fostering a supportive work environment. Ensure annual goals are established and reviewed in a timely manner, with a focus on achieving organizational objectives.

  • Risk Management: Promote a safe work and care environment by incorporating risk management principles into daily operations, ensuring the safety of both patients and staff.

Overall, the Director of Surgical Services plays a critical role in ensuring the smooth functioning of surgical operations, maintaining high standards of patient care and safety, fostering staff development, and driving continuous improvement initiatives to achieve organizational goals.

Qualifications

Your qualifications should include:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred

  • Will accept equivalent related experience in lieu of formal degree

  • BSN degree preferred

  • Leadership of a Surgical-Oncology department experience required

  • Minimum five to eight years of supervisory/management experience required
