The Arthur Riggs Diabetes and Metabolic Research Institute within the Beckman Research Institute under the lab of Dr. Farooq Syed seeks a Research Associate I to perform standard laboratory molecular and cell biology techniques, towards understanding mechanisms that regulate pancreatic beta-cell development, function, and regeneration, as well as diabetes pathogenesis. 

 

You must be willing to work with laboratory animal models.  You must also be flexible and available to work on weekends when required to meet project deadlines or team needs.  Ideally a two-year commitment is required.

As a successful candidate, you will:

·         Perform a variety of routine and non-routine laboratory research experiments:

Broad spectrum of molecular and cellular biology techniques using both in vitro and in vivo model systems, including but not limited to: mammalian cell culture (primary mouse and human islet culture, stable cell lines, and iPSCs), DNA and RNA isolation, RT-PCR, Western blotting, RNA and spatial sample preparation, sequencing library preparation, immunohistochemistry, tissue collection and processing, physiological assessments, imaging and image analysis, and evaluation of islet function and physiology in vivo and in vitro.

·         Provide advanced technical assistance, prepare stock solutions, handle and dispose of biohazardous and non-biohazardous materials according to safety protocols when necessary.  Ensure that all laboratory activities are carried out in compliance with each procedure(s) by utilizing safety procedures and guidelines in handling, storage and disposal of bio-hazardous, infectious and toxic material.

·         Lead and assist in the management of laboratory inventories.

·         Record and validate experimental plan, methods, and results for accuracy and completeness.  Develop new laboratory methods and help refine existing methodologies.

Qualifications

Your qualifications should include:

·         Bachelor’s degree with 0-2 years of laboratory experience.  Experience in an academic or industrial laboratory setting is preferred.

  • You must be familiar with routine molecular and cellular biological techniques, such as DNA and RNA isolation, qRT-PCR, Western blot, cell culture, and other related techniques. 
  • Experience in tissue isolation, operation of a microtome and cryostat and histological analysis, is preferred. 
  • Ability to work independently and willingness to work in a team-oriented manner.
  • Strong work ethic and communication skills, meticulous and detail-oriented record keeping habits.

·         Proficiency in MS Office applications, R Package or Python.
