The Director, Public Affairs and Issues Management, works in partnership with the executive director to provide strategic communications counsel across areas that present reputational and business risk to City of Hope. By collaborating with leadership to advance communication strategies that achieve specific organizational goals, the team develops messaging and integrated programming that builds relationships, shapes perceptions and drives desired business outcomes for City of Hope with target audiences. Specifically, this role will involve the strategic direction of corporate communications support across several high-profile, targeted areas, including Government Affairs and patient advocacy, ongoing policy discussions, executive communications and thought leadership, financial communications, and issues management. This position reports to the Executive Director of Public Affairs & Issues Management and has internal accountability to leadership teams of various stakeholder groups they support.
Public Policy and Government Affairs Communications- Create compelling, integrated external communications efforts that support our Government Affairs program and patient advocacy efforts at the national and regional levels. Leverage legislation, storytelling content, stakeholder engagement, coalition activities, executive visibility opportunities and media engagement to showcase City of Hope’s thought leadership and support for cancer patients everywhere.
Issues Management- Identify and prepare for relevant societal topics, industry trends, healthcare policies and reputational issues with potential for long-term impact on brand or business interests. Bring the Outside In – develop quarterly SET intelligence reports, with recommended actions, that spotlight near/mid-term trends, policy changes and operational issues. Scenario plan for key, high-level issues that require broad alignment and discussion.
Strategic Communications- Developing corporate narratives and messaging to successfully navigate sensitive issues, drive change management efforts and support leaders.
Cross Functional Collaboration and Integration- Support public affairs and issues management communications strategies across the system and in partnership with the government affairs, marketing, regional/entity leadership, and regional/entity marcomm teams. Drive consistency in messaging across all communication channels, including digital, social, and internal platforms, to reinforce a cohesive and impactful brand presence.
