The Public Relations Manager plays a key role in developing and executing strategic communications efforts that enhance City of Hope’s reputation and visibility and position City of Hope as a global leader in cancer research, science, and treatment. This role focuses on media relations, storytelling, and brand positioning to engage external audiences, including journalists, industry stakeholders, and the public.

The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker and skilled communicator who thrives in a fast-paced environment, proactively identifies media and storytelling opportunities, and collaborates across departments to ensure cohesive messaging. This role requires a hands-on, results-driven approach to public relations, with a strong understanding of the media landscape and a passion for impactful storytelling. 

Essential Functions: 

 

Public Relations

 

Identify strategic and creative PR opportunities to develop multi-channel PR campaigns that engage key external audiences, including patients, physicians, thought leaders, media, and the public at both the national level and across City of Hope regions. In collaboration with the communications and marketing brand team, the Manager will lead an integrated planning process and drive the execution of communications initiatives, such as awareness campaigns, key organizational projects, and major City of Hope campaigns. The manager must also be able to translate scientific research into clear, accessible narratives for external audiences, and may serve as a media liaison at medical conferences. 

 

Executive Visibility and Thought Leadership

 

Support the execution of a comprehensive thought leadership and executive visibility strategy through earned and sponsored events, media opportunities, awards, and other channels. Serve as a trusted advisor to C-level executives and subject matter experts, preparing them for speaking engagements and developing speeches and briefing materials.

 

Media Relations 

 

Support a media relations program that strengthens relationships with top-tier national, trade, and regional media to enhance visibility and position City of Hope as a leading voice in cancer research and care. Assist in developing media strategies, crafting news releases, managing freelance writers and agency support, newsjacking, creating compelling pitches, media training subject matter experts, and producing contributed content to drive impactful coverage.

 

Enterprise-wide engagement and support

 

Serve as a strategic partner to City of Hope regions, enhancing visibility and awareness through effective PR communication strategies. Collaborate with teams across the organization to develop and execute initiatives that align with overall goals. Create comprehensive toolkits and templates to ensure consistency and scalability across all regions.

 

Metrics, Reporting & Optimization

 

Track and analyze PR performance metrics, providing insights and recommendations for optimization. Prepare reports on media coverage, briefing booklets, campaign impact, and brand sentiment.

Qualifications

Your qualifications should include:

  • Bachelor’s degree.

  • 7+ years prior experience with corporate communications, preferably in the health care field or another dynamic and regulated industry.

  • Proven ability to set a vision, lead and manage wide-scale initiatives and teams on delivery of quality work.

  • PR agency experience preferred.

  • Experience with health care, biotech and scientific communications, and experience in large, matrixed organizations preferred.

Additional Information:

Job Status: Full time, exempt

Salary range $104,509 - $174,530

City of Hope employees pay is based on the following criteria:  work experience, qualifications, and work location.
