Supported by a regional network of care, our 11-acre academic cancer campus in Irvine is home to City of Hope Orange County Lennar Foundation Cancer Center, our outpatient cancer center, and Orange County’s only cancer specialty hospital.
With the opening of the hospital, the full continuum of advanced cancer care—from prevention through survivorship—will be available in Orange County for the first time, eliminating the need to travel for lifesaving treatment. Seamlessly connected to our outpatient cancer center, the new clinical research hospital will feature 73 inpatient beds, advanced surgical suites, groundbreaking clinical trials, and holistic services such as rehabilitative therapy and spiritual care. This isn’t standard cancer care. This is lifesaving cancer care. This is Hope.
Position Summary:
The Nurse Manager, Float Pool & Staffing Administration provides strategic, operational, and clinical leadership for centralized staffing functions at City of Hope, a nationally recognized comprehensive cancer center. This role oversees the Float Pool of Registered Nurses and Patient Care Assistants, as well as Staffing Administration teams including House Supervisors and Staffing Specialists. The Nurse Manager ensures safe, efficient, and equitable staffing across inpatient and procedural areas while supporting high-quality oncology care, workforce optimization, and regulatory compliance.
As a successful candidate, you will:
Leadership & Team Management
Provide direct leadership and oversight for Float Pool RNs, Patient Care Assistants, House Supervisors, and Staffing Specialists.
Recruit, onboard, coach, and evaluate staff; promote professional development, engagement, and retention.
Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, flexibility, and excellence aligned with City of Hope’s mission and nursing professional practice model.
Lead staff meetings, education initiatives, and performance management activities.
Float Pool Operations
Oversee daily operations of the Float Pool to ensure appropriate skill mix, competency validation, and deployment across clinical units.
Ensure Float Pool staff are trained and competent in oncology care standards, unit-specific workflows, and patient safety practices.
Collaborate with unit-based leadership to align Float Pool utilization with patient acuity, census, and clinical needs.
Monitor Float Pool performance metrics, including utilization, productivity, quality outcomes, and staff satisfaction.
Staffing Administration & House Supervision
Provide operational leadership for centralized staffing and scheduling functions, including daily staffing plans, coverage adjustments, and escalation processes.
Oversee House Supervisors in managing hospital-wide patient flow, staffing coordination, bed management, and after-hours administrative support.
Ensure Staffing Specialists effectively manage schedules, call-offs, overtime, agency usage, and staffing systems.
Serve as an escalation point for complex staffing, patient flow, and operational issues.
Quality, Safety & Compliance
Ensure compliance with regulatory, accreditation, union (if applicable), and organizational staffing requirements.
Support hospital-wide patient safety initiatives and emergency preparedness.
Monitor key performance indicators such as staffing effectiveness, overtime, agency utilization, patient throughput, and quality outcomes.
Lead or participate in audits, drills, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Financial & Strategic Stewardship
Participate in budget development and management, including labor expense oversight and cost-containment strategies.
Analyze staffing data and trends to support workforce planning, productivity optimization, and value-based care initiatives.
Collaborate with Nursing Leadership, Human Resources, Finance, and Clinical Operations to align staffing strategies with organizational goals.
Support system-wide initiatives related to staffing technology, workforce innovation, and operational excellence.
Qualifications
Your qualifications should include:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (or BSN not required if holds MSN)
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in an area of expertise relevant to the department with demonstrated progressive leadership growth
- California RN license (must obtain within 6 months of hire)
- American Heart Association-Basic Life Support (BLS)
- National Certification (must be acquired within 12 months of hire or transfer)
- Chemotherapy/Biotherapy certification preferred
